Vermont Diagnostic Imaging offers a quick 15 second hip bone density scan that can calculate your risk of osteoporosis and hip fracture.
This risk calculator is called FRAX and was developed by the World Health Organization to identify patients at risk of fracture and in need of treatment.
About DXA
DXA, which stands for Dual Energy X-ray Absortiometry and is sometimes also called DEXA, is a quick and pain-free way to measure how many minerals your bones contain and how strong they are. Healthcare providers might order this test to screen you for osteoporosis and other conditions that silently weaken your bones.
What to expect
The test usually takes 5 minutes or less and it is painless. You may be asked to change into a gown. You’ll be asked to lie on the DXA table, and a technician will help position you for accurate scan results. A scanning arm will glide over you taking pictures along the way. You will be asked to lie as still as possible during the scan.
How to prepare
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that doesn’t have metal zippers, buttons or buckles. Remove any metal like jewelry. Prepare to enjoy a few minutes of relaxation!
